Microsoft DirectX (vroeger WinG) is een groep technologieën gemaakt om op Windows-gebaseerde computers een ideaal platform te maken om programma's te draaien die rijk zijn in multimedia elementen zoals full-color graphics, video, 3D animatie en audio. DirectX bestaat uit DirectDraw, Direct3D, DirectInput, DirectSound, DirectMusic, DirectPlay en DirectShow. De meest gebruikte API's (Application Programming Interfaces) in computer (PC of spelcomputer) spellen zijn DirectX van Microsoft, OpenGL (Open Graphics Library) van SGI (Silicon Graphics) en Glide van 3dfx Interactive.
